Smuggled imported onion and garlic worth P135 million were recovered by authorities in warehouses in Manila and Malabon on Thursday, Feb. 17.

Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Director. PBGen. Romeo Caramat Jr. said 40 to 50 tons of imported onions and garlic worth P40 million were seized from 18 warehouses in Binondo and Balut, Tondo.

Another warehouse in Catmon, Malabon City with 250 tons of imported onions and garlic worth P95 million was also raided

“The operation was carried out in response to numerous reports of illegal importation and hoarding of agri-products, particularly locally produced onions and garlic,” Caramat said.

“The rampant illegal importation and hoarding of agri-products, particularly onions and garlic, is a serious concern that affects not only the livelihood of our farmers but also the food security of our country,” Philippine National Police Chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin said.

Azurin also vowed to work closely with partner agencies to “put an end to these unlawful practices.” -Katrina Gracia Consebido/gb
