Fire, as dangerous as it may seem, is also preventable.

Here are the different ways to prevent fire.

  • Check the condition of your home’s electrical system
  • Unplug your electrical devices that are not in use
  • Have a fire extinguisher at home
  • Keep your matches and lighter in a secured place, away from children and pets
  • After cooking, turn off your gas stoves and gas tanks
  • Keep an eye on burning candles

Meanwhile, the following are the most common reasons for fire incidents:

  • Electrical overload – This happens when wires are subjected to more current than they are designed to handle. This can result in the wires heating up and melting, which can start a fire
  • Unattended cooking – Never leave a stove unattended when cooking
  • Leaving candles or cigarette butts – Blow out candles before leaving the house and crush cigarette butts first before disposing them

What to do during a fire:

  • Act quickly but calmly, secure important documents
  • Dial the firefighters’ hotline
  • Make sure every family member is present and accounted for
  • Stop, drop, and roll if your clothes catch fire
  • Crawl low under the smoke to your exit
