DSWD aids oil spill-affected residents in Oriental Mindoro

At least 7,000 families from some barangays affected by the oil spill in Oriental Mindoro received assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) on Saturday, March 4.

DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian led the distribution of family food packs (FFPs) to residents of Naujan, Pola, Pinamalayan, Bonga­bong, Gloria, and Bansud towns in Oriental Mindoro.

In an Operational Period Briefing, Gatchalian said they are set to distribute 10,000 FFPs to the affected towns every four days.

On top of this, the DSWD will also launch a Cash-for-Work Program to augment the needs of fisherfolk and other residents who lost their livelihoods due to the oil spill.

The oil spill was brought by the capsized motor tanker MT Princess Empress carrying 800,000 liters of industrial oil on Feb. 28. – gb
