Microplastics are already present in Metro Manila air, a study revealed.

In a study conducted by Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, researchers found the presence of microplastics floating in the air of Metro Manila.

Microplastics are small pieces of plastic with a size of less than five millimeters.

Based on their ambient air sampling conducted in December 2021, it was found that 88% of total samples were “fibrous microplastic,” most of which were polyester which usually comes from the fluff of washed and dried clothes.

Other types of microplastics found in the air include PET plastics or those used in water bottle and styrofoam, as well as polypropylene commonly used in plastic packaging and PVC materials.

Meanwhile, Mandaluyong and Muntinlupa have the highest concentration of microplastics presence.

The study also noted that microplastics can also be carriers of bacteria, virus, and cancerous compounds.

It also found that one person could possibly ingest microplastic particles when exposed without a face mask on the streets of Metro Manila within four to five days. GB/Joshua Garcia – cf
