The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) raised the status of the Luzon grid to red alert from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 8.

Yellow alert was also raised over 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The NGCP said the available capacity is at 2,186 megawatts (MW) while the peak demand is at 12,468 MW.

“Five power plants are on forced outage, while three others are running on derated capacities, for a total of 1,354MW unavailable to the grid,” the NGCP said.

Following this, Meralco has implemented manual load dropping or rotating power interruptions of up to two hours in some of its areas covered.

Meanwhile, the Visayas grid was also put under yellow alert from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

A red alert status is raised when supply is insufficient to meet demand and the regulating requirement of the transmission grid.

A yellow alert, meanwhile, is issued “when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s regulating and contingency requirement.” – cf
