The national government’s total outstanding debt reached P13.91 trillion as of the end of April 2023, according to the Bureau of Treasury (BTr) on Thursday, June 1.

Based on the latest data from BTr, the Philippine debt grew by over P54.24 billion or 0.4% from the previous month’s P13.86 trillion.

In a statement, the BTr said this is due to the weakening of peso against the U.S. dollar and net issuance of external debt.

It added that 68% of the debt stock was sourced from domestic borrowings, while 32% was sourced externally.

Domestic debt amounted to P9.46 trillion or 0.6% lower compared to the end-March 2023 level due to the net redemption of domestic securities amounting to P57.79 billion.

Meanwhile, the national government’s external debt amounted to P4.45 trillion or 2.5% higher from the previous month. -ag
