Seven volcanic earthquakes and 309 rockfall events were recorded in Mayon Volcano in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Wednesday, June 14.

This is up from the preceding day’s one volcanic quake and 221 rockfall events.

In its 8:00 a.m. bulletin, the Phivolcs said a very slow lava effusion from the summit crater is still observed, while a fair crater glow “banaag” and and an incandescent rockfall shed were also observed.

Seven dome-collapse pyroclastic density current (PDC) events that lasted for four minutes were recorded, higher than the one two-minute PDC in the previous day.

Phivolcs also noted a weak plume emission, with rockfalls and continued moderate degassing continuing to produce steam-laden plumes. Sulfur dioxide emission also averaged 149 tons per day on June 13.

Meanwhile, the volcano’s edifice is inflated. The volcano remains under Alert Level 3 or “intensified unrest/magmatic unrest.”

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said 9,571 families or 37,231 individuals have been affected by Mayon’s unrest as of June 14.

The worth of assistance distributed is estimated at P33,640,219.14. – gb
