Up to 1 million plastic cards for the printing of driver’s licenses will be delivered within the next 60 days, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said Tuesday, June 27.

DOTr Undersecretary for Administration and Finance Kim Robert De Leon said this is part of the first delivery of the approved contractor to resolve the 5.2 million driver’s license plastic cards backlog.

“We expect the backlogs of the license cards to be addressed quickly. Our aim is to normalize the supply of the cards, so we will ensure that Banner [Plastic Card, Inc.] delivers these cards efficiently,” he said.

He said the DOTr is working to have the “cards delivered the soonest.”

“Banner Plastic Card, Inc. should be able to make its first delivery within 60 days from June 26, 2023 as part of the terms of reference,” he said.

Earlie, the LTO extended the validity of driver’s licenses expiring on April 24 to October 31 due to the card shortage.

It also announced a plan to launch a digitalized version for its services including permit renewal, online registration, and payment transactions.

De Leon said the procurement of cards for driver’s license adhered to the provisions of the Procurement Law, and that no company was favored during the process. –ag
