Number of families affected by Egay, ‘habagat’ rises to over 44K

MANILA – The combined effects of Typhoon Egay and the southwest monsoon (habagat) have so far affected 44,356 families in the country, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Wednesday.

This is equivalent to about 180,439 persons residing in 261 barangays in Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, Northern Mindanao and Soccsksargen, the agency said in its latest bulletin.

Of this figure, 2,324 families or 8,917 persons are being aided in 107 evacuation centers while another 472 families which is equivalent to 2,124 individuals are being helped outside.

The 44,356 families reported affected this July 26 is significantly higher than the 4,554 families reported last July 25.

The Office of Civil Defense earlier said that the affected families are a combination of those displaced and those not needing transfer or removal from their residence.

This includes families whose source of livelihood were affected but not needing evacuation.

The NDRRMC is also validating reports of one dead in Calabarzon and two injured in Calabarzon and Western Visayas.

Some 57 houses were reported damaged in Ilocos Region, Calabarzon, Western Visayas, Northern Mindanao and Soccsksargen, it added. (PNA)
