Death toll tops 27 from onslaught of ‘Egay’, ‘habagat’

The country’s disaster council said Wednesday, Aug. 2, that Super Typhoon “Egay” and the effect of the southwest monsoon or “habagat” left 27 individuals dead and 13 missing.

Two have been confirmed out of the 27 reported deaths, as well as 39 of the 52 injured cases, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Affected population has ballooned to 765,024 families or 2,856,962 individuals across 13 regions and 50 provinces.

The NDRRMC reported that 289,713 individuals were displaced, including 57,740 who are staying in 677 evacuation centers.

More damages

Latest report from the Department of Agriculture has estimated damages to the agriculture sector at P2.89 billion and production loss of 98,217 metric tons.

At least 63,722 hectares of agricultural areas were also affected in the Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, Soccsksargen, and Caraga.

To date, 142,365 farmers and fisherfolk have been affected by the super typhoon and “habagat.”
The NDRRMC also estimated that 48,495 houses were partially damaged and 1,876 totally destroyed.

Damage to infrastructure has also increased to P3,529,972,255.78.

Meanwhile, seven provinces and 17 towns have declared a state of calamity. – gb
