P40-M project to boost water supply in Iloilo City’s 3 districts

ILOILO CITY — Water supply in the three districts of this city is expected to improve as the pipe laying project of the Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) is set to be activated this coming December 22.

The more or less PHP40-million project covers the laying of pipes in Arevalo, Mandurriao and Molo districts. This forms part of the short-term program of the water utility to address water problem in these areas.

“It will improve the existing (water supply), but not on a 24-hour basis because we have problems on the distribution system,” said MIWD general manager Imelda Magsuci in an interview Tuesday afternoon.

Of the 18 barangays in Mandurriao district, only three barangays were unserved by the MIWD. The provision of water is not on a 24-hour basis but it is being rationed, Magsuci said.

“The commissioning of the pipeline, hopefully will allow a 24-hour distribution but the pressure is not the required 10-cubic meter per second. That we will know when the pipeline is already activated,” she said.

Meantime, around 6 percent of the households in Arevalo district are covered by the water utility.

MIWD has 24, 283 service connections in the seven districts of Iloilo City as of November this year.

Its franchise area also covers municipalities of San Miguel, Oton, Maasin, Cabatuan, Santa Barbara, Leganes and Pavia. (PNA)
