Women are advised to not use underwear at home to avoid fungal infection amid hot weather, House Deputy Majority Leader Rep. Janette Garin said Monday.

Garin, who is also a doctor and formerly served as Health secretary, reminded that the female intimate area should be kept dry to prevent developing itchiness due to sweating.

“Kapag medyo basa, napapawisan, at medyo mainit yung panahon, yan ay perfect petri dish para dumami yung ating fungi. Kaya siya nagiging makati,” she added.

However, the lawmaker clarified that fungal infection is not a sexually-transmitted disease.

“Kung nasa bahay ka lang naman or matutulog, it’s quite advisable na walang underwear o naka-pajama ka naman or naka-shorts,” the lawmaker said in a press conference.

“Yung ventilation na yan ay epektibo para mapigilan o hindi na lumala yung fungal infection,” she added.

Meanwhile, another doctor and the chair of the House Committee on Health Rep. Ciraco Gato Jr. cautioned the public against excessively drinking alcohol amid extreme heat conditions as alcoholic beverages tend to affect urination and may also cause dehydration.

“Dapat malaman natin na ang alcohol ay, generally, ito ay tinatawag na diuretic–nakakapagpabilis ng pag-ihi o pinapabilis niya yung pag-alis ng tubig ng katawan natin,” Gato said.

He added that alcohol should be consumed in moderation and, as much as possible, be coupled with drinking water to rehydrate the body. (with report from Mela Lesmoras/PTV News)
