Above 5.0-magnitude quakes jolt Davao de Oro, Eastern Samar towns

Two earthquakes of above magnitude 5.0 rocked Davao de Oro and Eastern Samar on Thursday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

According to Phivolcs, the first temblor hit 53 kilometers (km) southeast of the coastal town of Dolores, Eastern Samar 20 minutes past midnight.

Based on the information bulletin of Phivolcs, as of 1:25 a.m. of April 11, the tectonic quake had a depth of focus of 25 km. 

Instrumental intensities were recorded in the following areas:

  • Intensity III – Can-Avid, Eastern Samar; Dulag, Leyte
  • Intensity II – Alangalang, Abuyog, and Hilongos, Leyte
  • Intensity I – Quinapondan, Eastern Samar; Leyte, Carigara, Mahaplag, and Albuera, Leyte; Villareal, Samar; Sogod, Southern Leyte

Meanwhile, a magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolted 4 km southwest of New Bataan town in Davao de Oro around 11:33 a.m.

Based on the information bulletin of Phivolcs, as of 1:14 p.m. of April 11, the tectonic quake had a depth of focus of 8 km. 

Intensity V was felt in New Bataan, Pantukan, Mabini, Nabunturan, and Maco in Davao de Oro.

Intensity IV was recorded in the City of Tagum in Davao del Norte and in the City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur; while intensity III was felt in Boston, Cateel, Baganga, Manay, and Caraga in Davao Oriental.

Intensity II was also detected in the City of Mati, Lupon, and Banaybanay in Davao Oriental, while intensity I was felt in the City of Digos and Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; Tarragona, San Isidro, and Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental; City of Cotabato; Cagwait, Surigao del Sur.

Meanwhile, the following instrumental intensities were recorded: 

  • Intensity V: Nabunturan, Davao de Oro
  • Intensity II: City of Davao; City of Digos, Davao del Sur
  • Intensity I: Matanao and Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; Malungon, Sarangani; Magpet, Cotabato

According to Phivolcs, no damage was expected from both earthquakes although aftershocks are likely to be experienced. – avds
