The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will probe the death of a Candidate Coast Guard Non-Officer (CCGNO) who joined a sports fest activity at the Regional Training Center-Aurora on Sunday.

PCG Commandant, Adm. Ronnie Gil Gavan has ordered the Coast Guard Education, Training and Doctrine Command (CGETDC), and the Coast Guard Inspector General and Internal Affairs (CGIAS) to conduct a comprehensive investigation on the incident.

“I have also instructed CGETDC to review existing training rules, regulations, and guidelines to ensure that the trainees’ health and welfare remain the utmost priority in all PCG regional training centers across the country,” Gavan said in a Monday news release.

According to PCG spokesperson Rear Adm. Armando Balilo, the trainee fainted after a company run that ended at 8 a.m.

Said activity was part of a week-long Summer Sports Fest 2024 of the Coast Guard Non-Officers’ Course (CGNOC) Class 102-2023 at the RTC-Aurora in Barangay Mijares, Dipaculao.

He was brought to a hospital in Baler at 8:30 a.m. where the attending physician recommended intubation and transfer to a hospital in Cabanatuan City for further medical assistance.

“Upon arrival in Cabanatuan City at 11:10 a.m., the attending physician continued to monitor the CCGNO’s health condition due to his unstable vital signs,” Balilo said.

“Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was performed, but he was declared dead by his attending physician at around 1:45 p.m.” he added. – avds
