Magnitude 7.1 quake jolts Sultan Kudarat town

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake rocked the waters off Sultan Kudarat on Thursday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

State seismologists reported that the quake hit 133 kilometers (km) southwest of Palimbang town around 10:13 a.m.

Based on the information bulletin of Phivolcs, as of 10:53 a.m. today (July 11, 2024), the tectonic quake had a depth of focus of 722 km. 

Intensity IV was felt in Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental.

Intensity III was registered in the City of Mati, Davao Oriental, and in the municipality of Glan, Sarangani.

Intensity II was experienced in Maragusan, Davao de Oro; Tagum City, Davao del Norte; Libungan and Tulunan, South Cotabato; Kiamba, Maitum, and Malapatan, Sarangani; Koronadal City, South Cotabato; and General Santos City.

Intensity I was logged in Davao City; Tantangan, South Cotabato; and Lebak, Sultan Kudarat.

Meanwhile, the following instrumental intensities were recorded: 

  • Intensity III – Don Marcelino and Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental; and Glan and Malungon, Sarangani.
  • Intensity II – City of Tagum, Davao del Norte; City of Digos, Davao del Sur; Matalam, Cotabato; and City of Cotabato
  • Intensity I – Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; City of Davao; City of Kidapawan, Cotabato; Maitum, Sarangani; T’Boli and Tampakan, South Cotabato; Bagumbayan, Esperanza, Isulan, Kalamansig, Lambayong, and Lebak, Sultan Kudarat; and City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur.

According to Phivolcs, no damage is expected from the earthquake but aftershocks are likely. – iro
