The Department of Agriculture (DA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with OceanX for the conduct of ecology research and sustainable development of the country’s marine resources.

OceanX is a nonprofit global ocean exploration organization that collaborates with governments, educational institutions, scientists, and philanthropists to promote sustainable decision-making for healthier oceans.

Under the MOU, OceanX will use its state-of-the-art vessel OceanXplorer to conduct research exploration on the Philippines’ marine ecology.

In a statement Friday, DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the partnership would help the government come up with strategic plans to protect the country’s marine ecosystem through accurate data gathering and assessment.

“The data we gather will provide invaluable insights into our marine resources, our vast coastline, and the unique biodiversity we hold. It will help us devise better strategies for preserving and optimizing these resources for future generations,” he said.

OceanX co-chief executive officer Mark Dalio, meanwhile, said the partnership entails the use of a “cutting-edge” technology that would help the country ensure a “sustainable management” of ocean resources.

“Our partnership with the Department of Agriculture exemplifies how science and innovation can come together to create a long-term impact, not only in understanding marine ecosystems but also in supporting communities that depend on them,” he said.

“We look forward to working with the many scientists, policymakers, and community stakeholders, aimed to inspire stewardship of the oceans while equipping future generations with the knowledge and tools to ensure their sustainability.”
