Telcos reminded to consistently send mobile disaster alerts

MANILA — As tropical storm “Vinta” is expected to make a landfall Thursday or Friday morning, a senator reminded telecommunications companies to consistently send free mobile disaster alerts to warn the public of its impact that could affect them.

“We expect our telecommunications companies to consistently fulfill their obligation to the people in sending alerts as mandated by law,” Senator Grace Poe said in a press statement.

Under Republic Act No. 10639 or the Free Mobile Disaster Alerts Act, mobile phone service providers are mandated to send out emergency alerts at regular intervals in the event of impending calamities.

Violations of the law may be reported to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), according to Poe.

Poe said that calamities call for comprehensive action in communities to avoid a repeat of the loss of lives from the onslaught of typhoon Urduja which recently left the Philippine area of responsibility.

She said that although her office has received reports that mobile alerts were sent ahead of the typhoon, it is imperative for the community to also do their part to ensure the safety of all.

The senator urged residents, local government units, concerned agencies and even the private sector to work together in ensuring public safety. (Azer Parrocha/PNA)
