President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. directed the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to implement an increased fare discount for all students, including those currently enrolled in post-graduate studies, in the primary train lines in Metro Manila starting Friday.

According to DOTr Sec. Vince Dizon, the 50% student discount is applicable in Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), Light Rail Transit Lines 1 (LRT-1), and 2 (LRT-2) every day, including weekends and holidays.

“Ang directive ng Pangulo is magdagdag tayo ng discount for all students sa LRT-1, LRT-2, at MRT-3 at ’yong dating 20% discount lang sa mga estudyante ay inutos ng Pangulo na gawing 50% starting today (June 20),” Dizon said during the launching of the initiative at LRT-2 Antipolo Station.

The DOTr secretary underscored the President’s directive to help ease the daily expenses of students as classes in public schools resumed earlier this week.

“Malaking tulong ito sa mga pamilya lalo na sa mga magulang na hirap magpaaral sa kanilang mga anak. ‘Yong matitipid nila, pwede nilang ilaan sa ibang gastusin gaya ng mga project, dagdag nila sa baon, o sa iba pang mga gastusin sa school,” Dizon added.

Students who wish to avail the discounted rates must present their valid ID within the current school year.

The DOTr also clarified that the promo is valid for single journey tickets only—which must be bought at the ticket counters—and not applicable for beep cards or stored value cards.

All students will be able to enjoy the increased fare discounts on trains until 2028, the DOTr said.
