Through science-driven innovations, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu-Laurel Jr. is undertaking significant measures towards reinvigorating the farming industry to boost local production, enhance food security, and reduce dependence on imports.

Such efforts harness the power of technology and research, which could eventually lead to sustainable agricultural growth, and become more self-sufficient in meeting our food needs.

The Department of Agriculture (D.A.) led the inauguration of the newly-rehabilitated tissue culture laboratory and biocontrol agents facility at the Bureau of Plant Industry–Los Baños National Crop Research, Development, and Production Support Center last June 26, paving the way for future advancements in the field of biological research in the country.

This was in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. vision of an innovative self-sufficient agriculture, as a pioneering achievement that would be realized through the two innovation hubs.

The innovative lab produces high-quality planting materials for crops like banana, ube, and garlic, using advanced technology to help farmers increase yields and ensure stable food supplies. It also provides farmers with superior planting materials for key crops, boosting productivity and supply chain stability.

Moreover, the biocontrol agents facility will help farmers manage pests and diseases sustainably, reducing chemical use and boosting resilience to climate and market shocks, which promotes eco-friendly farming practices.
