Driver is DTI regional director for a day

ILOILO CITY — From driver to regional director in one day.

This happened to Reynaldo Tejero who served as regional director of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for a day on Thursday, a break from his official designation as the agency’s driver for 17 years.

Tejero’s designation as regional director was part of the “Bida Boss” program that is unique only in DTI-Western Visayas, said regional director Rebecca Rascon. It is part of the non-monetary benefit extended by the regional office to performing employees.

The “boss of the day” will hold office in the Office of the Regional Director, take immediate action on all official communications and perform necessary functions except the authority to sign.

It is an on-the-spot recognition to 25 percent employees in the region based on their Final Individual Performance Rating (FIPR), 360 degrees rating where they will be rated by their peers and the supervisor’s rating.

“This is our way of recognizing people that hinges on the culture of DTI, which is coaching and mentoring,” said Rascon, who was behind the initiative.

We coach people, we mentor them to be ready to move up the organization ladder, she added.

Tejero’s first order of the day was to send a memorandum to all drivers in the five provincial offices of DTI to submit a report on the amount spent for the fuel and maintenance of their vehicles in 2017.

Each province has one vehicle while the regional office has three, he said during an interview Thursday afternoon.

He hoped that at the end of the day, his officemates will remember him as being efficient in exercising his task as regional director.

Tejero belongs to the Mythical 5 of the DTI Sprint Award, which recognizes top performing employees of the department at the national level.

Tejero is the only non-technical person of the four employees of the DTI 6 who were included in the national mythical 5 percent. The three others include two senior trade and industry development specialist from Aklan and Capiz and the human resource management officer of the regional office. (PNA)
