DAVAO CITY–The Filipino-Chinese Bakery Association (FCBAI) has opened the 10th International Exhibition on Bakery, Confectionery and Food Service Equipment and Supplies at SMX Convention Center in Davao City on Thursday. The event will run from March 1 to 3.
FCBAI past president Bien Enrico Ah said there are 78 companies and international exhibitors from Japan, Italy, Singapore bringing with them latest machineries and equipment.
He said FCBAI is holding the event in Davao to share this kind of exposure not only to the Dabawenyos but the people in Mindanao on the latest baking equipment and technology.
Ah said the event is the first in Mindanao where the baking industry shows an uptrend. “There is also big growth in terms of bread products consumption among Mindanaoans,” he added.
There are 21 types of technical seminars and product presentations for free during the three-day fair. The lectures are provided by experts on the latest techniques in baking, he said.
Cecil Abarquez Dela Cruz, the president of the Davao Bakers Club said the club has some 30 members around Mindanao who have physical bakery stores. It is really of great advantage that the Bakery Fair 2018 is held in Davao City as this would benefit us all. The technology and the exposure to the latest ingredients would help us improve our products, she said.
With improved products, Dela Cruz said the organization aims to make it comparable to those in Manila and in other countries.
“We can benefit on the technology and the science behind it because you cannot bake with the recipe alone as you need to improve your knowledge about baking and know the science behind it,” she said.
Hannah Grando, the president of the Mindanao Cake Decorating Society, said the 2,400 members to attend the workshops like the exhibition.
“We want them to follow the proper way of baking by also following good manufacturing practices,” she stressed. “We will also tie up with the Department of Science and Technology,” she said.

Ah said the Bakery Fair is a biennial event which started in 2001. It is organized to showcase technological advancement and techniques in baking, gain competitive intelligence about market leaders and to track industry trends and its opportunities.
Davao City Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre said the Bakery Fair is declared as an accredited event of the 81st Araw ng Dabaw celebration where the city festivities also opened on March 1. (Digna D. Banzon/PNA)
