Bike-riding gunmen kill cop, ship officer in Zamboanga

ZAMBOANGA CITY — The local police is conducting an in-depth probe to unmask the gunmen behind the killing of a policewoman and a shipping firm executive in separate incidents Monday morning in this city.

Killed in separate shooting incidents were PO2 Lydia Halid, 40 and Almondo Rosalejos, chief engineer of M/V Mary Joy 2.

Supt. Mark Azur, Police Station 7 chief, said Halid was shot and killed at around 8:35 a.m. at 2nd Navarro Drive, Barangay San Roque, this city.

Azur said Halid was driving motorcycle with two of her relatives as back riders when shot by a lone gunman standing at the side of the road.

Halid, who was assigned with the Station Drug Enforcement Team (SDET) of the Police Station 8, died instantaneously while her two relatives sustained bruises when they crashed on the pavement.

The triggerman, after shooting Halid, boarded a waiting motorcycle that sped off from the crime scene.

Recovered from the crime scene were three empty shells of caliber .45 pistol.

Supt. Hajiri Langal, Police Station 6 chief, said Rosalejos was shot and killed at around 7 a.m. along Don Alfaro road in Barangay Tetuan.

Langal said Rosalejos was driving motorcycle on his way home when shot by one of two men riding in tandem on a motorcycle that tailed the victim.

Rosalejos was the chief engineer of M/V Mary Joy 2 that had just arrived at the local port coming from Jolo, Sulu.

Investigation has continued in a bid to identify and possibly arrest the suspects behind the two incidents. (PNA)
