2 road projects seen to support Boracay tourism

MANILA — Two major road projects worth PHP270 million are set to make travelling in the world-famous island of Boracay in Aklan province easier.

Public Works Secretary Mark Villar earlier inspected his department’s projects on the island, which include the construction of an access road leading to Caticlan Airport worth PHP220 million and the rehabilitation of the Boracay Circumferential Road valued at PHP50 million.

In a statement issued Thursday, the director of Western Visayas’ regional public works office, Wenceslao Leaño, said the new access road to Caticlan Airport measures 2.75 km.

Once completed, it will support economic activity, particularly in the Nabas-Caticlan area, the gateway to Caticlan Airport.

On the other hand, he said the improvement of the Boracay Circumferential Road involves the construction of a two-lane, six-meter wide road with curb and gutter, drainage, sidewalk and street lighting component.

It will complete the missing gap of the road, will reduce congestion along the main thoroughfare, and will also cut travel time from the jetty port to other areas of the island.

Leaño noted that the completion of the road projects is a priority, as the flocking of tourists to Boracay Island has a huge impact on the country’s tourism industry.

“Monitoring of these projects is conducted regularly to ensure that implementation will go smoothly and will be completed on time,” he said. (PNA)
