LEGAZPI CITY — Vice President Leni Robredo on Friday said she is open to supporting the proposed divorce law provided the separation process is accessible to the poor and must not curtail the constitutional provision protecting the sanctity of marriage.
Robredo, in an interview here during the launching of Albay provincial library and information center, said she believes the amendments of existing laws like the “Family Code” are needed to make the divorce process accessible for the poor.
She, however, said the divorce bill must not be rushed and must be seriously discussed.
“Yung hope naman natin dadaan pa to sa Senado, sana magkaroon ng masusing debate ukol dito (Our hope is this will be discussed in the Senate, I hope there will be intensive debate about this),” she said.
With a vote of 134-57-2, the House of Representatives on Monday approved on third and final reading the Absolute Divorce Bill.
Meanwhile, Robredo joined the Albayano in the celebration of international crusade to end violence against women (VAW) as the keynote speaker.
This year’s event carries the theme “1B Rising for Solidarity.”
Robredo urged all women in Albay to continue the campaign and create vigilance among women to rise, resist and be united against violence.
“Economic empowerment for women gives her in the position to fight for her rights. She is in a better position to tell that “I will not allow myself to be abuse anymore”,” she said.
The vice president also witnessed the ceremonial turnover to next year’s campaign host, the Department of Education (DepEd) regional office. (PNA)
