Trough of ‘Jelawat’ to bring rains in E. Visayas

MANILA—The trough of tropical storm “Jelawat” (international name) outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) will bring scattered rains and thunderstorms in eastern Visayas, state weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Monday.

The northeast monsoon is also expected to bring isolated light rains in northern Luzon.

In its 24-hour forecast, Pagasa said “Jelawat”, or “Caloy” in local name once it enters the PAR, was last observed at 1,320 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur at 3 a.m. Monday.

It has maximum winds of 65 km/h near the center with gustiness of up to 80 km/h and is moving west northeast at 23km/h.

The regions of Eastern Visayas and Caraga will have cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms caused by the trough of “Jelawat” which may cause floods or landslides due to moderate or at times heavy rains.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will have cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains caused by the northeast monsoon.

“Jelawat” is expected to enter the country today. (Lily O. Ramos/PNA)
