CvSU professor back after topping post-graduate studies in Japan

INDANG, Cavite — An Associate Professor of Cavite State University (CvSU) is back in town to resume his professorial stint at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS) after topping his post graduate studies in Japan.

Allan Robert C. Solis, CvSU Director for Public Information and Community Relations Office, on Thursday said the academic community here takes pride in Dr. Melbourne R. Talatac’s feat for topping in the doctoral program in Doctor of Philosophy in Veterinary Science, major in Veterinary Virology at the United Graduate School of Veterinary Sciences in, Japan.

Solis said that Talatac qualified for the Japanese government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) research scholarship grant in 2014 and completed his dissertation and post-graduate studies under Prof. Tetsuya Tanaka this year.

Back to his professorial stint, Talatac has renewed his commitment to the state university to share his expertise in support to the University’s vision and mission of becoming a Global University in 2020.

Aside from being a presidential awardee as top graduate in his class, Talactac also received the Young Researcher Award (Best Oral Presentation), during the 160th Meeting of the Japanese Society of Veterinary Sciences, Kagoshima, Japan in September 2017 and the Best Oral Presentation at The United Graduate School of Veterinary Sciences, Yamaguchi University Summer Seminar in August 2017.

While in Japan, Talatac was able to publish 14 research papers in different Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) — indexed journals and produced one institutional Japanese patent.

His expertise includes antiviral compounds, innate antiviral immunity, and tick-borne pathogens that inspired him to work on his scholarly feat titled, “Studies on the survival dynamics of tick-borne viruses in the hard tick Haemaphysalis longicornis and the effects of tick antimicrobial peptides on viral replication”.

Talactac earned his Master of Science in Veterinary Medicine, major in Preventive Medicine at Chungnam National University, Republic of Korea.

Talatac’s scholarly feat “is another milestone (for CvSU) after the commendation as top performing state university for 2017,” Solis added. (PNA)
