PNP remits P6.4-B in withholding taxes to BIR

MANILA — Individual taxes paid by Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel surged to more than PHP6 billion, nearly PHP1 billion more than the previous year, outgoing PNP Director General Ronald dela Rosa said Monday.

“I am pleased to share with all of you the compliance of all 196,256 personnel of the PNP to our individual tax obligations. The PNP remitted to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) a total of PHP6.367 billion, representing taxes withheld from individual PNP taxpayers,” dela Rosa said.

The 2017 tax remittances of the PNP rose by 78 percent from the total tax remittances in 2016 which amounted to PHP5.17 billion.

In the PNP, the individual tax withheld is automatically deducted from the monthly salary of PNP personnel. Taxes withheld become obligations of the PNP to the BIR that is remitted to the latter periodically, dela Rosa said.

The PNP Finance Service strictly implements the tax due equals tax withheld pursuant to revenue regulations.

He explained that with the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) law in effect this year, individual taxes levied on most PNP personnel has been substantially adjusted.

This year, the BIR has set the deadline for the filing of income tax returns for the year 2017 on April 16 as the original April 15 deadline fell on a Sunday. (Benjamin Pulta/PNA)
