3 suspects in Maguindanao beheading case yield

COTABATO CITY–Three suspects behind the April 27 beheading of two farmers in Barangay Gumagadong Calawag, Parang, Maguindanao, voluntarily surrendered to police on Sunday night.

Supt. Ismael Jambiran, Parang police chief, identified the suspects who confessed to the crime as Malik Kumayog, 22; Unasan Mawaraw, 24; and Kamlon Hadjigani, 23. They are all residents of Barangay Panggao, Barira, Maguindanao.

Jambiran said the suspects surrendered to local officials of Barira and were turned to them around 7:30 p.m. Sunday. He said the three admitted to the beheading of farmers Ceasar Fermin, 42, and Jabon Bistas, 21, both residents of Purok Lansones, Barangay Gumagadong Calawag, Parang.

The decapitated bodies of the two farmers were found in the early morning of April 28, several hours after they were killed on the night of April 27 at a copra drying hut in Gumagadong Calawag village.

The victims’ severed heads were found on April 29 at a forested area near the border of Parang and Barira towns.

An initial police report showed that a drinking binge between the suspects and the victims resulted in a quarrel that later escalated into the violent incident. (PNA/Noel Punzalan and Edwin Fernandez)
