DepEd Calabarzon bares regional winners of Natl Literacy Awards

TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite – Department of Education’s (DepEd) Regional Search Committee (RSC) announced on Tuesday the results of its 2018 National Literacy Awards search.

The RSC, composed of Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and the DepEd, through the Curriculum and Learning Management division (CLMD), came up with the results “after a thorough validation, interview and ocular visit to the sites of the different programs and projects implemented by the municipalities of the Division entries,” said DepEd Region IV-A Director Diosdado San Antonio, in his regional memorandum.

All regional winners are the official entries to the 2018 National Literacy Awards.

Tagaytay City under Mayor Agnes D. Tolentino was hailed as Calabarzon’s outstanding local government unit (LGU) under the component/independent city category while Calamba City Mayor Justin Marc SB. Chipeco got the first runner-up spot.

For the outstanding LGU in the 1st to 3rd class municipality/class A, Tanay (Rizal) Mayor Rex Manuel C. Tanjuatco gets the ‘outstanding’ spot, while Mayors Sofronio C. Ona (Calaca, Batangas), Fernando Q. Llamas (Mauban, Quezon) and Milbert L. Oliveros (Cavinti, Laguna) got the 1st, 2nd and 3rd runner-up awards, respectively.

Mayor Antonino A. Aurelio of Rizal, Laguna got the outstanding LGU award under the 4th to 6th class municipality, with Mayor Pepito Reyes of Perez, Quezon as first runner-up.

For the Literacy Program, only the entry of Bahay Aruga Center in Nasugbu, Batangas met the required search criteria, thus emerged as the Outstanding Literacy Program winner.

All Regional Winners will be endorsed to LCC Secretariat on or before June 11 for another round of validation by the board of judges (BOJs) to select the national winners.

The national awards program, whose awarding ceremony is set on Sept. 4 to 6, aims to recognize best practices in literacy which help alleviate poverty, provide livelihood, address welfare needs, promote freedom and make education facilities accessible.

The award categories include the ‘Outstanding Literacy Program,’ an award given to civil society organizations, private organizations and private educational/academic institutions that have developed and implemented literacy programs that elicited positive impacts on learners and communities.

Another award category is the ‘Outstanding Local Government Unit (LGU), given to LGUs that developed and implemented literacy policies, programs and projects which have positively created impacts on the quality of life of their constituents. (Gladys Pino/PNA)
