PGH to prioritize trauma cases starting June 1

MANILA — The Philippine General Hospital (PGH) will be renovating its Emergency Room (ER) and obstetrician (OB) facilities starting June 1 to enhance their capacities.

“This (renovation) is really to enhance it, increase the capacity, provide more isolation rooms, four operating rooms, and a bigger holding area. And it requires a bit sacrifice among the public,” said PGH Spokesperson Dr. Jonas del Rosario in an interview Wednesday.

Del Rosario said the renovation might take 10 months beginning June 1.

He said that the sacrifice can be done by the public by accessing other nearby hospitals instead of PGH to avoid clogging of patients as they will prioritize only the trauma cases, e.g. those who suffered from stroke, heart attack, accidents, appendicitis or intestinal obstructions and those pregnant women who are about to give birth.

“If it’s not really an emergency, don’t head to PGH anymore. Just go to the nearest hospital in your area so that we can allow or give a chance to those patients who really have life-threatening conditions,” he said as an advice to the patients and their relatives.

The non-threatening conditions that he was referring to which can be brought to other hospitals include cough and colds, diarrhea, etc.

However, he assured that still they will not refuse patients and stabilize them first before referring them to other hospitals.

“Syempre kung andyan ‘yung pasyente sa harap namin, at pumunta sa PGH. If the patient is presented to us in PGH, we will attend to them and stabilize them in the ER,” he said. (Leilani Junio/PNA)
