Rains to persist due to enhanced ‘habagat’

MANILA— Severe tropical storm “Maliksi” (formerly Typhoon “Domeng”) is out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) since Sunday but continues to enhance the southwest monsoon (habagat) that will bring moderate to heavy rains in most parts of the country Monday.

In its 4 a.m. bulletin issued Monday, state weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said “Maliksi”, affecting Luzon and Western Visayas, was last observed at 1,770 kilometers northwest of Basco, Batanes.

It has maximum winds of up to 100 km/hr with gustiness up to 120 km/hr and moving east-northeast at 23 km/hr.

“Domeng” had exit PAR Sunday morning, Pagasa said.

Pagasa said rains will pummel Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon due to the southwest monsoon, as Pagasa warned of possible flooding and landslides in some areas.

Western Visayas will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms also due to the southwest monsoon. Mindanao and the rest of Visayas will have cloudy skies with isolated rain showers caused by localized thunderstorms.

Strong gale winds from the southwest is affecting central Luzon, northern and eastern sections of Northern Luzon, the western and southern sections of Southern Luzon bringing rough to very rough coastal waters.

Temperature in Metro Manila ranges from 24-27 degrees Celsius; Tuguegaro City 26 -32 degrees Celsius; Baguio City 17- 19 degrees Celsius; Metro Cebu 27-33 degrees Celsius; and Metro Davao 26-33 degrees Celsius. (Lily Ramos/PNA)
