OWWA to provide aid to kin of slain OFW in Slovakia

MANILA — An official of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Monday assured that assistance will be provided to the family of Henry John Acorda, the overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who was slain in Slovakia.

In an interview Monday, Undersecretary Jacinto Paras said financial and transportation assistance will be given by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) to Acorda’s family.

“OWWA will always help the repatriated OFW because that is OWWA’s mandate,” Paras said.

Paras added that the remains of Acorda, which are set to arrive at 11 a.m., Tuesday will be fetched by OWWA officials at the airport.

Meanwhile, OWWA Administrator Hans Leo Cacdac said the family will be provided with death and burial assistance ranging from PHP100,000 to PHP200,000.

An active OWWA member is covered by death benefits amounting to PHP100,000 for death due to natural causes and PHP200,000 for death due to accident.

Likewise, the legal heirs of the OFW will be getting an additional PHP20,000 for the funeral expenses as part of the burial benefits.

Cacdac said the victim’s family are also entitled to livelihood benefits amounting to PHP15,000.

Acorda was beaten to death after he attempted to defend two women who were harassed by Slovak nationals last May 26. (Ferdinand Patinio/PNA)
