Fox lauds DOJ nod on appeal vs. BI leave order

MANILA — Sister Patricia Fox expressed delight on Monday over the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) decision reversing the Bureau of Immigration (BI) order cancelling her missionary visa and ordering her to leave the country.

“I’m very happy, yes,” she said in an interview with reporters on Monday, minutes after Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra nullified the BI’s order against her.

“Yeah that’s good news. We will just have to wait and see what happens, whether that affects the deportation case also (because) that is separate from the visa issue,” the 71-year-old nun added.

Fox said she is pleased with the Justice Department’s decision of the DOJ.

“I’m just pleased (with the ruling). “I’m quite surprised actually,” she said.

Fox has been in the country for over 27 years and is an advocate of the rights of indigenous peoples and oppressed workers among others.

The deportation case against Fox is still being heard at the BI, for being an undesirable alien. This is in connection with her supposed participation in political rallies, which according to BI, is a violation of the conditions of her stay in the country. (Ferdinand Patinio/PNA)
