Cebu jail to segregate prisoners after killing of high profile inmate

CEBU CITY — The Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) has bared plans to segregate its inmates based on their respective cases following the killing of a high-profile detainee inside the Mandaue City Jail on Tuesday.

Provincial jail warden Reynaldo Valmoria on Wednesday said he will segregate the inmates at the CPDRC to avoid the same fatal incident from happening.

“I don’t want any killing incident to happen at CPDRC, so I will have to segregate the inmates and group them based on their cases or status,” Valmoria said.

Before noon last Tuesday, alleged drug lord and high-profile inmate Steve Go was shot four times by a fellow detainee and died inside the Mandaue City Jail following an argument over a coins game locally known as “hantak”.

Valmoria said the segregation is actually part of his long-term plan for the provincial jail facility, which is already overcrowded.

He said he will group high-profile inmates in one cell to easily monitor them and thwart any attempt on their lives by other inmates.

Considered high-profile inmates at the CPDRC include self-confessed drug lord Alvaro Alvaro, notoriously known as “Barok,” and Bohol Provincial Board Member Niño Rey Boniel, who is serving time for allegedly killing his wife, Bien Unido Mayor Gisela Boniel, and dumping her body into the sea on June 7 last year. (Luel Galarpe/PNA)
