Red Cross-Antique needs more blood donors

SAN JOSE De BUENAVISTA, Antique — The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) is campaigning for more blood donors in Antique to come up with at least 1 percent blood supply for the 582,012 population of the province.

Ma. Patricia Isabel A. Florida, PRC chapter administrator for Antique, said that they continuously conduct bloodletting activities just like in the town of Sebaste.

Tuesday’s bloodletting was in coordination with the local government unit aimed to generate around 30 units of blood from the donors or 450cc for each bag.

“In Antique, there is still some sense of hesitancy among blood donors so that we continuously conduct awareness campaign,” she said.

She hoped that they could achieve the 1 percent blood supply requirement for Antiqueños this year as they were unable to reach the target in 2017.

She added that so far there was no dengue patient who requested for fresh frozen plasma or platelet from the PRC Antique.

“It could be possible that they made the request in our Iloilo Blood Center or wherever they are confined,” she said.

Florida said that the PRC Antique chapter is just a collecting unit for blood and so the blood processing, like for dengue patient, is done at the Iloilo Blood Center.

“For patients that make their request here, the PRC Antique ties up with the Iloilo Blood Center for the needed blood which sends it through the public transport,” she said. (Annabel Consuelo Petinglay/PNA)
