Household profiling up in 2 ‘Yolanda’-hit Antique towns

SAN JOSE De BUENAVISTA, Antique — The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) is in the process of conducting household profiling in the two municipalities of Antique affected by super typhoon Yolanda as part of its vulnerability capacity assessment (VCA).

Ma. Patricia Isabel A. Florida, PRC chapter administrator for Antique, said the two towns, which are recipients of the VCA project funded by the Canadian Red Cross, are Belison and Valderrama.

“There are five barangays in each town of Belison and Valderrama that are recipients of the project,” she said.

She said the VCA is much similar to the geo-hazard mapping of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau but that the focus is the identification and prevention of various health problems, as well as raise the municipalities’ disaster resiliency.

The five barangays in Belison are Rombang, Senaha, Salvacion, Concepcion and Maradiona while in Valderrama, these are Pandanan, Bugnay, Binag, Burokburok, and Lublob – where indigenous people are residing.

Since the start of the profiling in April, emerging health problems of households in Belison are hypertension and increasing mortality rate while diarrhea and dengue are the emerging health problems in Valderrama.

Florida said that hopefully by July they could already start the awareness campaign among households.

The health issues will be referred to both Municipal and Provincial Health Offices so these could be addressed.

She said that the VCA will last for a year, with trained staff visiting households three times a month for awareness-raising and providing other interventions based on the tool that they use.

She added that last year these two towns were also recipients of their community-based first aid training and community-based disaster risk reduction and management training. (Annabel Consuelo Petinglay/PNA)
