DAVAO CITY – A village councilman in Maco town, Compostela Valley province was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Tuesday afternoon, police said.
Chief Inspector Milgrace Driz, of the Police Regional Office-11 (PRO-11), identified the victim as Omar Escobar Macusang.
Macusang, 45, was on board his pick-up car – on his way home from the mass oath-taking ceremony of barangay officials at the Maco Gym – when he was attacked by still unidentified assailants, Driz said on Wednesday.
Driz said Macusang, who was also a businessman and contractor, suffered several gunshot wounds in different parts of his body.
He was rushed to the Davao Regional Medical Center in Apokon, Tagum City, but was declared dead on arrival.
Driz said policemen securing Maco Gym, who responded to the incident engaged two perpetrators, hitting one of them in the leg. But the assailants were able to flee on a motorcycle.
The attackers were already trailing Macusang and, upon reaching the bridge along the National Highway, the back rider fired several rounds using an unknown firearm, police said. The vehicle crashed on the roadside railings, giving the gunman the chance to finish off Macusang.
Driz said investigators recovered from the crime scene several cartridges and bullets. (Lilian C. Mellejor/PNA)
