BIR closes 9 erring businesses in Region 1

CALASIAO, Pangasinan — The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) in Region 1 (Ilocos region) has temporarily closed nine business establishments that were found to have under-declared their sales.

Regional Director Clavelina Nacar of BIR-1, in an interview Monday, said the assessment division of BIR-1 conducted the July audit on establishments not directly under the revenue district offices.

“Inupuan ng aming kasama, araw-araw andun siya para makita kung tama ba ang idineklara nila. It turned out na dapat mas malaki ang kanilang ide-declare (One of our colleagues sat down with them every day to see if this business establishment declared rightly its sales income. It turned out that they should have declared a bigger sales income),” Nacar said.

She added that if a business establishment failed to truthfully declare its actual sales, BIR will impose “Oplan Kandado” or the temporary closure of the establishment until it has paid its appropriate tax.

“We give taxpayers enough time to pay. We serve the violators 48-hour notice then five-day compliance before the actual temporary closure,” said Nacar.

“We will implement the audit program to businesses as wide as we could cover,” she noted.

Nacar encouraged taxpayers to declare truthfully their sales income since their taxes go to government services that benefit Filipinos.

“They can see that the ‘Build, Build, Build’ program of the government is continuous; road widening and infrastructure project continues. One more thing, if your child enrolls in colleges or universities in the country, they can study for free. Paying taxes is also a good help because you are giving future to the children who cannot afford to enroll in colleges. Government is giving opportunity for them to earn a degree. We should help one another because our government cannot move without funds,” she explained. (Hilda Austria/PNA)
