NBI nabs illegal recruiter who promises work in Qatar

MANILA—Operatives of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has arrested an illegal recruiter who duped workers into paying PHP25,000 in processing fees supposedly in excchange for employment as hotel staff in Doha, Qatar.

NBI Director Dante Gierran said Sarah Jane Esteban was arrested by the NBI International Airport Investigation Unit (NBI-IAIU) after some of her victims were offloaded as passengers who later identified her as their recruiter.

Esteban gave them tourist visas to Malaysia after which she promised that they would then be given proper working papers for Qatar.

She was arrested by NBI agenst after she was informed by the victims that they were offloaded from their flight.

Esteban, it later turned out, did not have the necessary license or authority to recruit workers.

The suspects was brought before the Pasay prosecutor’s office for inquest proceedings for charges of violation of Republic Act No. 8042 or the Migrant Workers and Overseas Act of 1995 and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003. (Benjamin Pulta/PNA)
