BAGUIO CITY — The city government recognized on Monday four barangays for maintaining a drug-free status since the start of President Rodrigo Duterte’s campaign to rid the country of illegal drugs.

The City Council has issued Resolution 241-2018, co-authored by 11 members of the local legislative body, lauding Barangays Country Club Village, Upper Dagsian, Happy Hollow, and Lower General Luna for being declared as drug-free barangays since 2016.

Baguio City Vice Mayor Edison Bilog read the resolution and awarded the barangays, together with Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan, during Monday’s flag-raising ceremony at the City Hall.

“It is the policy of the state to safeguard the integrity of its territory and well-being of its citizenry from the ill effects of dangerous drugs,” Bilog said, reading the resolution.

He cited BCPO records that show these four are the only villages out of all the 128 barangays in Baguio that has maintained a drug-free status.

“We congratulate and commend the four barangays through the leadership of their officials in pursuing an intensified and unrelenting campaign against illegal drugs and ensuring that their barangay remains drug free,” Bilog continued. “(Let this) be an inspiration to the other barangays of the city to likewise strengthen their implementation of barangay drug clearing programs.)

In a statement sent to the Philippine News Agency (PNA), Bilog said commending the four barangays is proper, as it shows their dedication and commitment to support the government’s anti-illegal drugs campaign, which the President, himself, leads.

In 2017, the regional anti-illegal drugs validation committee declared six barangays in Baguio as drug-affected. This number increased to 24 after the March 2018 validation, with 18 more barangays included on the list. (Liza Agoot/PNA)
