Elementary classes remain suspended in Ilocos Norte

LAOAG CITY — The Ilocos Norte government suspended classes in elementary level today, August 14, as the southwest monsoon or “habagat” continues to bring rains to this northern part of Luzon.

Gov. Imee Marcos, however, said “classes at higher levels and work in both public and private sectors may be suspended by local chief executives in light of power outages, severe weather conditions and other compelling reasons”.

As of this posting, moderate to occasional heavy rains are experienced in the province. Members of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council continue to monitor the situation.

In Caruan village, Pasuquin town, village chief George Ragonjan reported Tuesday that at least six houses near the shoreline are threatened by high waves.

“We have already advised the affected coastal residents to take preemptive evacuation and help them move to a safer ground,” Ragonjan said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said Tuesday that a low pressure area was estimated at 760 kilometers East Northeast of Basco, Batanes based on all available data.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Leepi was estimated at 1,775 kilometers East Northeast of extreme Northern Luzon with maximum sustained winds of 90 kilometers per hour with gustiness of up to 115 kilometers per hour.

The local government units here are also advised to monitor their areas and take precautionary measures against flash floods and landslides. (Leilanie Adriano/PNA)
