Journos, volunteers plant trees in Pangasinan

BALUNGAO, Pangasinan — Members of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters sa Pilipinas (KBP) Pangasinan chapter and other volunteers joined the annual ‘Oplan BroadcasTreeing’ where they planted 2,000 seedlings of various kinds of trees in barangay Pugaro here on Saturday.

Mark Espinosa, chairperson of KBP-Pangasinan, in an interview on Saturday, said the tree planting activity is part of the environmental advocacy of the media organization which started in 2011.

“This is in line with the call of KBP national chapter for a simultaneous tree-planting activity on August 18 in the whole country, but since we experienced flooding and weather disturbances in the province, the schedule for Pangasinan was moved to August 25,” Espinosa said.

He clarified that although the event was led by the media organization, it was not limited to media practitioners as some volunteers have supported their activity.

The Oplan BroadcasTreeing 2018 was in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Pangasinan, Department of the Interior and Local Government, municipal government of this town and other non-government organizations including the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines and a bikers’ organization, Espinosa said.

He added that the site for the tree-planting, which is under the National Greening Program (NGP) of the government, was designated by the DENR- Pangasinan.

NGP is a national government initiative that aims to reforest denuded mountains all over the country.

“Last year, we planted seedlings at barangay Tebag Mangaldan, along the riverbanks of the municipality, while this year, it was on the mountainous area within the coverage of NGP,” Espinosa said.

Among the varieties of seedlings to be planted are fruit-bearing trees and Mahogany, he added. (Hilda Austria/PNA)
