Indian Embassy lines up activities for Int’l Day of Non-Violence

MANILA — The Indian Embassy in Manila will be holding various activities in Manila on Tuesday to celebrate the International Day of Non-Violence.

The occasion, marked every 2nd of October, is in commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of Indian independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy behind peaceful resistance.

The Embassy on Tuesday will begin the celebration through a LED projection of a 4-minute film which will highlight lessons from Gandhi’s life that are relevant in the modern era.

The film will consist key moments taken from Gandhi’s life, his inspiring quotes, everyday sayings, discourses and initiatives presented in visual narrative using line-art style of hand drawn illustrations layered with water color and ink wash that symbolize and represent the simplicity that was Gandhi’s Life and his Teachings.

The presentation will take place at Panorama Tower, 34th Street Corner Lane A, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City from 5:30 p.m onwards.

The Embassy will also release commemorative postage stamps and hold an online quiz competition (Bapu@150) during the event.

On October 5, Bharati Manila in association with the Embassy will also host a seminar on the life and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi.

In addition, the Embassy in collaboration with the Department of Health, the Philippine Blood Center and Khalsa Diwan (Indian Sikh Temple) will organize a blood donation camp on October 7.

October 2, 2018 marks the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. To reflect universal respect to the Indian leader, a UN General Assembly resolution in June 2007 was adopted, declaring October 2 as the International Day to “disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness.”

The resolution reaffirms “the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence” and the desire “to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence.” (Joyce Ann L. Rocamora/PR)
