ZAMBOANGA CITY – A total of 65 weightlifters from different parts of the country are set to see action in the two-day 2nd Zamboanga Hermosa Weightlifting competition from Saturday to Sunday here.

The competition is part of this year’s Zamboanga Hermosa Festival, the main highlight of the feast day of Our Lady of the Pillar on October 12.

Councilor Elbert Atilano, Philippine Weightlifting Association vice president, said Friday the competition is open to weightlifters aged 13 to 24.

Atilano said the 65 registered participants are from Midsalip, Zamboanga del Sur, Rizal, Cebu, and this city.

“Through this competition, we will be able to choose who among the weightlifters will continue the quest of Hidilyn Diaz,” he said.

Diaz, a Zamboangueñga, bagged the silver medal in the 53-kg. category in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Atilano said the competition’s gold medalist will receive PHP3,000 cash; silver medalist, PHP2,000; and bronze medalist, PHP1,000. For the team prizes, the first placer will get PHP6,000; second placer, PHP4,000; and third placer, PHP2,000.

The two-day competition will be held at the Universidad de Zamboanga Institute of Human Kinetics. (R. G. Antonet Go/PNA)
