2 die, 7 hurt in Zambo Sur highway collision

ZAMBOANGA CITY — Two people died while seven others were wounded when a truck carrying fish rammed seven vehicles, including two motorcycles, along the highway of Zamboanga del Sur, police said Tuesday.

Senior Insp. Niel Clifton Pugoy, Dumalinao police chief, said the incident happened in Purok Maabtikon, Barangay Paglaum, Dumalinao at about 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Pugoy identified the fatalities as Ariel Napalcruz, the driver of the truck, and Mario Rola Balabag.

Wounded were Cpl. Fedilo Nalzaro Tabotabo of the Army’s 44th Infantry Battalion; Liezel Pepito; Milky Magsayo; Juldan Ederosas Aiyadi, truckman; Simplicio Noval Sr., truckman; Esterlita Oberes Aselo; and Ronie Oberes Aselo.

Pugoy said investigation showed the truck was traveling at a high speed on a descending road when it collided head-on with an incoming truck after its brake malfunctioned.

The truck rammed into six other vehicles, including two motorcycles, fell on its side and skidded, he added. It was bound for Pagadian City and came from Zamboanga City at the time of the accident.
