Comelec Pangasinan welcomes automated voter verification

DAGUPAN CITY — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in Pangasinan welcomed the use of the voters registration verification system (VRVS) machines, as the province was chosen as one of the pilot areas its use in next year’s mid-term elections.

Provincial election supervisor, lawyer Marino Salas, said the election process will speed up with the use of VRVS machines.

“Hindi na natin kailangang gumamit ng listahan para icheck ang pangalan ng botante. Ipatung na lang nila ang kanilang daliri sa machine at lalabas na lahat ng detalye gaya ng pangalan, voting precinct at iba pa (We don’t have to use the voter’s list to check the name of the voter. They just have to put their finger on the machine and all the details like name, voting precinct, among others, will be shown),” he said in an interview Monday.

After the machine confirms that the voter is registered in that place, the voter will be given a ballot and could begin casting his vote. Otherwise, he or she will not be allowed to vote if not confirmed by the VRVS.

He said the VRVS machines are part of the election automation in the country.

“Lahat na automated, mula sa casting votes, counting, transmitting pati registration, yong verification na lang talaga (Everything is already automated, from the casting of votes, counting, transmitting and even registration, except for the verification),” he said.

If the result of the VRVS would turn out good, then it would be possibly integrated to other areas in future elections, Salas added.

“In the meantime, election officers throughout the province would undergo training to ensure the proper use of the VRVS machine,” he said. (Ahikam Pasion/PNA)
