Laguna’s tourist cops train on basic rescue, disaster ops

STA. CRUZ, Laguna – Personnel of Laguna’s Tourist Police Unit (TPU) have embarked on a three-day basic rescue training that began Wednesday, to enable them to respond to emergency situations and disaster operations in tourist destination areas.

“This training (course) involves the familiarization of equipment, high-angle rope rescue management, basic knot tying, anchoring system, storage and safety of equipment, types of rappelling, belay system, and victim packaging,” Senior Insp. Catherine Javier Ilao, chief of the Laguna police’s public information office, told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Thursday.

The training is hosted by the Laguna police, in partnership with the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).

TPU trainees have already taken up basic knot tying, storage and safety of equipment, at the Camp Gen. Paciano Rizal multipurpose hall. Their high-angle rope rescue training was conducted by PDRRMO training officers.

Ilao said Thursday’s training sessions, held at the Gov. Felicisimo T. San Luis National High School, covered the provision of first aid, the anchoring system, types of rappelling, belay system, and victim rescue “packaging/strapping”, under the supervision of PDRRMO rescue training officers.

She said the training course will culminate on Friday with actual demonstrations and presentations of specific emergency rescue scenarios. (Saul Pa-a/PNA)
