Davao City, developers ink deal for socialized housing

DAVAO CITY — The local government and two real-estate firms here Friday signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the development of 20 hectares of land for socialized housing.

Under the agreement, Mayor Inday Sara Z. Duterte said SM Development Corp. (SMDC) will develop 15 hectares in Barangay Lasang while Camella Communities, through its affiliate Vista Land, will develop the remaining five hectares.

“We thank Camella Communities Philippines and SMDC for working with us in the city government and the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board (HLURB) for the land development of the city government property in Lasang,” Mayor Sara said.

The project, she said, is part of the city government’s compliance with the Urban Development and Housing Act of 1992, requiring developers to develop an area for socialized housing. It will include roads, drainage, and other facilities with ready provision for electricity and water.

The entire development will amount to nearly PHP500 million, with Camella shouldering more than PHP130 million and SMDC shelling out PHP322.4 million.

Mayor Sara said localized housing remains one of her top priorities to give irregular settlers decent homes.

“Housing is a top priority for the city government, and during my State of the City Address earlier this month, I announced that discussions are underway to develop our property in Lasang to make it suitable for housing purposes,” she said.

“With today’s signing, we make good on our promise as we officially seal our agreement on the land development, including the development of open spaces, roads, drainage, and other facilities, of said property,” she added.

After the land development in the area, the construction of the housing units will follow – to be undertaken by the National Housing Authority. (Funny Pearl Gajunera/PNA)
