BACOLOD CITY — After finishing as runner-up in the past three years, Barangay Tangub captured the much-coveted championship trophy in the street and arena dance competition of the 39th MassKara Festival on Sunday night.
Barangay Tangub, mentored by veteran MassKara dance trainor Segundo “Panoy” Cabalcar Jr., dislodged last year’s champion Barangay 18, which settled for first runner-up, in a tightly-contested barangay category that saw all the top three winners splitting the five special awards.
Last year, Barangay Tangub was third runner-up, and first runner-up in 2015 and 2016.
Aside from romping away with this year’s top cash prize of PHP100,000, Barangay Tangub also received the award for Best in Original Music.
Barangay 18, which received PHP75,000, won Best in Choreography and Best in Costume.
Barangay Villamonte, which was second runner-up with PHP50,000, was awarded Best in Concept and Best in Mask.
This year, Barangay Alijis was third runner-up with PHP30,000, an improvement from its fourth runner-up finish in 2017, while Barangay Mandalagan finished only as fourth runner-up with PHP20,000 after winning second runner-up last year.
Each of the winners of the five special awards received an additional PHP7,000.
Meanwhile, Education Training Center School-II (ETCS) and Mandalagan National High School were declared champions in the elementary and high school categories, respectively, on Saturday.
ETCS- II won four out of five special awards – Best in Choreography, Best in Original Music, Best in Mask, and Best in Costume while Mandalagan National High School bagged three out of the five – Best in Original Music, Best in Mask, and Best Costume.
Both champion schools received a cash prize of PHP70,000 each, and an additional PHP5,000 for each of the special awards.
Other winners in the elementary category were Montevista Elementary School, first runner-up; C.V. Ramos Elementary School, second runner-up; and Patricia Homes Elementary School, third runner-up.
C.V. Ramos Elementary School was awarded Best in Concept.
In the high school category, Barangay Singcang-Airport National High School was first runner-up; Mansilingan Agro Integrated High School, second runner-up; and Bacolod City National High School, third runner-up.
Mansilingan Agro Integrated High School won Best in Concept while Barangay Singcang-Airport National High School was named Best in Choreography.
Both the first runners-up received PHP50,000 each; second runners-up, PHP30,000 each; and third runners-up, PHP20,000 each. (Nanette Guadalquiver/PNA)
