Koronadal’s P16-M traffic light system unveiled next week

KORONADAL CITY — The city government will unveil next week its newly-completed PHP16 million traffic light system project, covering two major road intersections.

Mayor Peter Miguel said Wednesday the traffic lights — the first for the city — are currently undergoing final stages of testing and will be ready for the scheduled launching on November 15.

“It’s important for our motorists and pedestrians to know how these will work to ensure its proper rollout and avoid possible problems later on,” Miguel said.

Located at the national highway junctions of Arellano and Posadas Streets, the traffic lights were installed last month.

Miguel said the project was delayed by more than two months due to various factors, among them the unpredictable weather that hampered the reconstruction of the junction diversion roads.

The transfer of the affected power lines and telecommunication cables reportedly added to the delay.

With the operationalization of the traffic lights, Miguel hopes that the perennial traffic congestion along the two road junctions and adjoining roads in the city’s downtown area will eventually ease.

The General Santos Drive-Arellano Street and General Santos Drive-Posadas Street junctions are considered among the busiest areas in the city in terms of vehicular traffic — especially during the rush hours.

“We will still continue to deploy enforcers in these areas to properly manage the flow of traffic and assist crossing pedestrians as well,” Miguel said. (PNA)
